A notorious gang known as the Panga Boys, responsible for a wave of gruesome machete attacks in Kisauni Sub-County, has been dealt a significant blow as the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) arrested 51 of its suspected members on Tuesday.
The gang, believed to number over 51 individuals, has terrorized residents across multiple neighbourhoods, including Corner Ya Kisauni, Jocham Hospital, Barisheba, Sunlight, Mwandoni, Junda, Cobra, and Kadongo Grounds, with reports of victims having their heads and hands chopped off in violent assaults.
The arrests followed a multi-agency operation launched to dismantle the machete-wielding group, which has instilled fear in the coastal community with its brazen attacks.
Authorities confirmed that the suspects were apprehended in a coordinated sweep targeting their known hideouts and operational zones.
During the crackdown, police also seized five tuk-tuks believed to have been used by the gang in phone-snatching incidents, further linking them to a broader crime spree.
“In a continued effort to curb criminal gangs, our teams have rounded up 51 suspects connected to the infamous Panga Boys gang,” a DCI statement read.
“These individuals are now in custody at Mjambere Police Station, where they are being processed ahead of their court appearance.”
The operation highlights a resumed push by security forces to restore order in Kisauni, an area long plagued by gang-related violence.
Residents have recounted chilling tales of the gang’s brutality, with some alleging that the Panga Boys have targeted unsuspecting locals, leaving a trail of severed limbs and bloodshed.
“They strike without warning,” said a shopkeeper from Sunlight, who requested anonymity out of fear.
“People have lost hands, and some didn’t survive the attacks. We’re just relieved the police are finally acting.”
The Panga Boys, named for their preferred weapon of choice, have been linked to a surge in violent robberies and assaults in recent months, prompting outrage and calls for decisive action from community leaders.
While the arrest of 51 members marks a significant step, authorities have hinted that more gang affiliates may still be at large, with investigations ongoing to identify and apprehend additional suspects.

Mombasa County officials have praised the DCI’s efforts but stressed the need for sustained measures to eradicate the gang.
“This is a good start, but we must ensure the safety of our people,” said a local administrator. Meanwhile, the seized tuk-tuks have raised questions about the gang’s operational tactics, with police now probing how these vehicles were used to facilitate their crimes.
As the 51 suspects await their day in court, Kisauni residents are cautiously hopeful that the arrests will bring an end to the Panga Boys’ reign of terror.
