Bomet Church Burn Elderly Woman in Ritual to Expel ‘Evil Possessions’

Bomet – A shocking incident unfolded in Bomet County on Saturday when worshippers at a local church reportedly set an elderly woman ablaze in a ritual intended to rid her of what they described as “evil possessions.”

The disturbing event, which occurred in the Kapkwen area, has left the community reeling and prompted swift action from local authorities.

According to eyewitness accounts, the incident took place during a church service at an unnamed congregation, where members accused the woman—believed to be in her 70s—of being under the influence of malevolent spirits.

In a bid to “cleanse” her, the worshippers allegedly doused her with a flammable substance before setting her on fire.

Neighbours and passersby intervened after hearing her screams, managing to extinguish the flames, but not before she sustained severe burns.

Bomet County Police Commander Edward Imbwaga confirmed that the woman was rushed to Bomet Health Centre, where she is currently fighting for her life in critical condition.

“This is a horrific act. We have launched an investigation to establish the full circumstances and identify those responsible,” Imbwaga told reporters.

Several church members fled the scene as police arrived, but authorities have detained three individuals for questioning.

Residents expressed outrage over the incident, with some calling for the church to be shut down. “This is not Christianity; this is madness,” said a local shopkeeper who witnessed the aftermath.

The event follows a similar occurrence in Kapkwen earlier this month, where police closed Bethel Church after its pastor beat congregants during an exorcism ritual, raising concerns about unregulated religious practices in the region.

County Health Chief Officer Felix Langat reported that the victim suffered extensive burns covering much of her body. “Her condition is dire, and we are doing everything possible to stabilise her,” Langat said.

Meanwhile, police are investigating the church’s leadership and its operational status, with preliminary reports suggesting it may not be legally registered.

The incident has reignited debates over the rise of extreme religious acts in rural Kenya, with community leaders urging the government to tighten oversight of such groups.

As investigations continue, authorities have appealed for calm and promised swift justice for the victim.
